Dave, this is a very intriguing photograph. I am amazed at the light effects on the sculpture. What is the sculpture you photographed for this artwork? It made me think of "Dark Night of the Soul", and St. John of the Cross... Thank you, voted!

David Dehner replied:

Hi Susan - thank you for your great comments and vote - My model for this image was actually a cast iron lamp base - found in my parents attic - It was the figure of a crescent moon with an angel sitting on it - this is a close-up of the face of that moon. - Dave

Artist's Description

The Darkest Hour Is Just Before The Dawn

The darkest hour has long been used figuratively to mean the lowest ebb.

The English theologian and historian Thomas Fuller appears to be the first person to commit the notion that the darkest hour is just before the dawn to print.
His religious travelogue A Pisgah-Sight Of Palestine And The Confines Thereof, 1650, contains this view:

It is always darkest just before the Day dawneth.

About David Dehner

David Dehner

Creating images that inspire insightful dialogue among viewers is my objective. A drawing, painting, print or any art should awaken reminiscence of one's past or inquisitiveness of places and things of interest or beauty. The majesty of an eagle soaring high above mountain tops or the delicate beauty of a flower nourished by nature can inspire a feeling of knowing life is unfolding as it should. I was raised in Northeastern Pennsylvania where my family has lived for generations. A child of hard working parents (as most of us were) I worked various jobs and professions while earning a college degree. My interest in art began very young when my father became fascinated by nature photography. Watching my father work in his darkroom and...
